The initial "barcode readers" were a form of wands. Primitive but popular till today because of their low cost and relative efficiency, wands need to be manually scanned across barcodes to read the code - for this reason they have earned the title of "contact" scanners.

A more recent innovation, barcode laser scanners are both quicker and easier to use than the original wand scanners and require no physical contact. Capable of reading barcode from distances of up to 3cm, they are considerably more expensive than wand scanners.
